Medicinal Meats
Red No.3
Based on a discussion of the social value of meat in rapidly growing economies, the question is the extent to which flesh is industrialized at the expense of other food resources. It visually poses these inquiries onto the state flower of Michigan, which, in itself, is similarly seeking economic resurgence. What are the burdens we place on the environment? What are the natural atrocities we commit daily to fulfill the quarterly revenue goals of industrialized food service? To what extent are we killing ourselves in the name of meat?
This installation is both personal and civic, as we all face internal complications we elect to ignore. The colon. The prostate. All are victims of the perception and deception that meat symbolizes financial success, to the point that false claims and advertising become a medical mantra. With this installation, we hope you will consider meat a finite resource and the misconception that it is part of a balanced plentitude.
